어쩌면 내 진로를 결정하기까지 가장 많은 영향을 준 분이다. <배철수의 음악캠프>를 거의 놓치지 않으려고 한다. 말도 안되는 선곡과 그의 박식함과 이 아저씨가 누구를 만나든지 드러나는 그의 노련한 입담이 어렸던 나의 spirit을 깨워주었기 때문이다.
「배철수의 음악캠프 20년 그리고 100장의 음반」책이 발간되었고 막 사서 읽는 중이다. 서점에 널린 명반 베스트100 이라든지 팝송의 역사에 대한 수많은 책들 가운데 하나에 불과할지 모르지만 나에게 있어서는 또 다시금 도전의식을 갖게끔 해준다.
배철수 아저씨를 볼 때마다 느끼는 감정은 하나다. 그건 바로 감히 측정할 수 조차 없는 배철수의 음악적 지식에 대한 질투심이다. 이 아저씨가 나보다 더 많은 음악을 들었고 더 많이 알고 있다는거에 대한 질투심이다.
하지만, 최근 들어 생긴 감정은 바로 희망이라고 해야할까. 배철수 아저씨의 인생에서는 나는 잘 알고 있지 않은 - 앞으로도 전혀 모를-  doors 나 neil young , led zeppelin 등등의 음악이 그에게 어떤 영감을 주었을지는 몰라도 아마 지금 nas나 maxwell 등의 아티스트들이 나에게 주는 어마어마한 영향들을 고려할때 그리고 그걸 바탕으로 과거음악을 들었을 때를 생각해보면 어쩌면 배철수아저씨는 결코 모를 나만의 세계가 열릴것 같다는 일종의 자신감이 생긴다고도 말할 수 있겠다. 난 자신있다. 절대 지지 않을거니까.
